Keith Donerson was named Head Football Coach of the Indy Pirates in March 2023.

During Donerson’s time in Independence, he has produced over 20 Division 1 student athletes, most notable: Emmit Gooden (Tennessee) and the #1 Junior College player in 2018, Jermaine Johnson (Georgia).

Coach D has coached for over thirty years, holding positions of Head Coach, Defensive Coordinator, and position coach on both sides of the ball. Donerson spent the 2015 season at San Bernardino Valley Community College (Ca.) as the offensive line coach. Donerson was a member of Mountain Conference Championship team that went 9-1 and finished #2 in the state of California. Donerson’s offensive line paved the way to the # 1 rushing offense in the conference and was #2 in passing offense. The offensive line was led by Arkansas signee Paul Ramirez.

Donerson coached at Dominguez High School (Compton, Ca.) from 1986-2014, serving as head coach from 1997-2014. During Donerson’s tenure as head coach, the program won three California State Titles (CIF Champions in 1996, 2005, 2006). During the 1996 and 2005 seasons, Dominguez High School was ranked #2 in the state of California and #12 in USA Today. While Donerson was at the helm, the program produced 12 NFL players. Most recent: Richard Sherman (CB, Seattle Seahawks), Jeron Johnson (SS, Washington Redskins), Altraun Vernon (CB, Tampa Bay Buccaneers), Chilo Rachal (OL, Chicago Bears) and LaJuan Ramsey (DT, Philadelphia Eagles). Donerson also served one year (2008) as defensive coordinator and defensive line coach at Compton Community College. The defense was #1 in the conference in four categories; overall defense, turnovers, defensive touchdowns and sacks.

Donerson has coached over 100 players that earned division one scholarships, including 31 players to the PAC 12, 8 players to USC, and 3 players to the SEC. Coach Donerson believes in the Pirate’s motto: Educate, Matriculate and Graduate. Over 70% of Donerson’s players graduated from division one universities.

Coach Donerson has a Master’s degree in Kinesiology (Coaching & Athletic Administration) from University of Concordia Irvine, California and a Bachelor’s degree in Organizational Management from Ashford University, Iowa. Donerson was born in Jackson, Miss, the son of Willie and Helen Donerson and brother of Lisa. A native of Carson, Ca., he has three children: Chris, Chrystal, Keion, and two grandchildren Deshawn and Kasidee.
