Pirates Prepare For Coffeyville Red Ravens In 102nd Montgomery County Showdown

October 19, 2018

INDEPENDENCE, Kan. - Following a whirlwind of events last week, the Independence Pirates (1-5) return home to face arch-rival the Coffeyville Red Ravens (2-5) in the Montgomery County Showdown.

"Coffeyville is a very athletic and fast program," Coach Kiyoshi Harris said. "Defensively, they do a variety of different things on defense to make opponents think a lot more."

"They are going to do some stuff underneath and take away over the top to mix up things up and get our guys to thinking too much." "We just have to play our game, make stops on defense and move the chains into scoring opportunities."

Independence totaled 379 yards of total offense against Iowa Western behind Chase Hildreth who went 23-for-42 passing for 237 yards and one touchdown while throwing one interception in a 44-21 loss to Iowa Western. The Pirates also scored two touchdowns as Davijuan Dean picked up 105 yards on 27 carries.

"We just have to play smart football and prevent from committing careless penalties and put Chase in position to where he can make good reads and not allow him to overthink himself as he has another week under his belt to continue to get better."

"Defensively our guys did an outstanding job and played a great game as far as putting us in the right positions and if we can build off that same type of energy it will be a great game."

"There's a lot of history behind this game and people in the community are going to be there expecting a great game, but I'll just be happy if our kids come out and give it 100 percent."

Coffeyville totaled 225 yards of total offense last week in a 24-14 loss to Hutchinson as quarterback Carson Proctor went 8-for-28 passing for one touchdown while throwing two interceptions. The rivalry dates back to 1925 and Independence is 18-79-4 all-time against the Red Ravens.
