COFFEYVILLE, Kan. - The Independence Pirates Volleyball team was unable to pick up their first KJCCC win of the season, falling to Coffeyville in four sets on Wednesday night.
The Pirates (7-16, 0-4) jumped out a great start, winning the first set 25-21. The Pirates held a lead for much of the second set as well before the Red Ravens found some momentum and rode it to a 27-25 thrilling set two victory.
Indy struggled to get the momentum back in their favor as they dropped the third set by a score of 15-25, before eventually falling in a close fourth set, 23-25.
Offensively, the Pirates had an even spread of scoring, highlighted by their two Middle Blockers, Tasiya Combs-Pierce who had nine kills in 19 attempts, and Keeley Brown with seven kills on 12 attempts. Hailee Townsend matched the team high with nine kills, while Ryleigh Zitek and Alyssa Trane each had eight kills. Sophia Reyes once again paced the Pirates defensively with 22 digs, while Combs-Pierce and Brown each had five blocks.
The loss moves the Pirates into a last place tie with Fort Scott in the KJCCC standings, as they will take the weekend off before gearing up for a busy five match week to follow. The Pirates will head to Miami, Oklahoma for a tri-match on Monday, before their next KJCCC game against nationally ranked KCKCC on the road on Wednesday.
