FORT SCOTT, Kan. - The Independence Volleyball team picked up their first win of the 2025 season as part of a split on the first day of the Fort Scott Tournament.
In the first match of the day, the Pirates took down Ottawa University JV in straight sets, 25-17, 25-21, 25-23. Indy was led by a pair of freshmen, as Alyssa Tane had seven kills offensively and 10 digs defensively. Serrena Hernandez made her mark as well with four service aces and 16 assists.
The second match of the day did not fare as well for Indy as they fell to Western Iowa Tech in straight sets, 21-25, 21-25, 16-25. Serrena Hernandez just about matched her assist total from the first match as she notched another 15, while fellow freshman Kat Balog led the way with eight kills. Sophomore Sophia Reyes led the Pirates defensively with 13 digs in the second match.
Independence will be right back in action tomorrow with two more matches, as they will take on Metropolitan CC at 10:00 am and will finish out their opening weekend against Dallas-Brookhaven at 2:00 pm.
