INDEPENDENCE, Kan. - The Pirates Women's basketball team couldn't overcome a tough shooting night as they fell to Seward County 78-39 on Saturday afternoon.
Indy found themselves playing from behind the whole afternoon as Seward jumped out to a quick 9-0 lead. The Pirates had a tough time offensively for much of the first half as they weren't able to breakthrtough and make their first field goal until the 4:34 mark of the first quarter to make it 9-4, before the Saints finished the quarter on an 8-2 run. The second quarter was much of the same as the Pirates were outscored 20-9 and trailed 37-15 at the break.
Indy did regroup at the break and came out aggresive in the third quarter as they doubled their point total in a matter of just five minutes and cut the lead to 47-33 at one point. Seward did finish the quarter strong as they went on a 9-2 run to push their lead back to 21 through three quarters. The fourth quarter presented a lot of the same struggles as the first half as Independence was unable to score in the final 8:34 of the game, resulting in the eventual 39 point loss.
Seward was able to take advantage of 19 Pirate turnovers that led to 27 points, and they also had 46 points in the paint. Independence did pull down 10 offensive rebounds but that only led to two second chance points.
Asmin Tahnan led the way in scoring with 12 points, while Mikka Chambers was the only other Pirate to finish in double figures with 11. Lauryn Gentle pulled down nine rebounds and also added two blocks on the defensive end. Tanhan also had a team high three steals.
Despite the loss, Independence is still tied for the final spot in the KJCCC tournament and will now shift their focus to Wednesday, when they will travel to taken on nationally ranked Dodge City Community College.
