Tough 3rd quarter for Indy leads to road loss at Pratt

PRATT, Kan. - The Independence Women's basketball team played well enough to win but struggles to start the second half led to a 60-54 loss to Pratt CC Wednesday evening.

In what was a low scoring first half, the Pirates were hanging tough in a very back and forth game and were able to finish the first quarter with a two point advantage. The second quarter was much of the same with neither team able to pull away. Although it did look like Pratt was going to head to the locker room with a lead until the Pirates went on a quick 5-0 run in the final 18 seconds of the first half. Alison Reese made a jumper, followed by a turnover that led to a Mikka Chambers three right before the halftime buzzer.

The third qaurter is where things started to go south for the Pirates, as at the five minute mark, Pratt began a 17-4 run to finish the quarter and push a two point lead to a fifteen point lead heading into the final frame. Pratt ultimately won the quarter 23-8, which would be the highest scoring quarter for them, and the lowest scoring quarter for the Pirates.

Indy would go down swinging though as they bounced back with a very strong fourth quarter. The Pirates made a late push as they still trailed by 15 with four minutes before finishing the game on an 11-2 run, ultimately falling by six.

Alison Reese led the way in scoring once again as she had 22 points and 11 rebounds giving her a double-double. She also had five steals. Mikka Chambers pitched in 15 points, nine rebounds, and three blocks while going a perfect 8-8 from the free throw line. Tionne Johnson finished in double figures as well with 10 points and Lauryn Gentle pulled down 10 boards.

The loss moves Independence to 2-24 overall, and 1-19 in KJCCC play. The loss has them tied with Fort Hayes Tech for the final spot in the KJCCC tournament.
