INDEPENDENCE, Kan. - With the regular season coming to a close it is time to gear up for postseason basketball in the Jayhawk Conference.
Both Independence Basketball teams have qualified for the KJCCC conference tournament, and both teams will hit the road this Saturday for the first round.
The Indy Women wrapped up the 12th seed with their win over Fort Hays Tech Wednesday night, and will now travel to take on 5th-seeded Cowley on Saturday at 1:00 p.m. Cowley finished the regular season 20-9 overall with all nine losses coming in conference play. The Tigers enter the tournament on a winning streak as they have won their last four games and seven of their last eight, with their lone loss coming to Coffeyville. Independence finished the year 2-22 in conference play with their two wins coming against 11th-seeded Pratt, and their thrilling finale over Fort Hays. Cowley won both of the regular season matchups in dominant fashion, as they won 88-34 on their home court back on December 11th, and followed that up with a 109-55 victory in Independence on February 11th. The winner will advance to take on Butler, who Cowley played in their regular season finale, winning by 24.
The Independence Men’s Basketball team will also hit the road on Saturday, as the 10th-seeded Pirates square off with 7th-seeded Garden City at 4:00 p.m. Garden City finished the regular season 17-13 overall, and an even 12-12 in conference play, losing the tiebreaker for the 6th seed to Colby. The Broncbusters enter the tournament as winners of two straight with wins over top four seeds Coffeyville and Hutchinson back in February. The Pirates on the other hand, come in as losers of three straight and eight of their last nine, but have impressive wins over top four seeds Hutchinson and Barton earlier in the year. Garden City won both of the regular season matches between the two teams, an 89-85 win back on December 4th, and a 99-94 win at home on February 5th that kickstarted Indy’s tough stretch to finish the regular season. The winner will advance to take on 2nd-seeded and nationally ranked Coffeyville in the second round.
