Pirates bounce back to split with Ottawa

OTTAWA, Kan. - The Independence Softball team got back in the win column as they were able to bounce back, after losing game one 5-3 to take game two from Ottawa University 9-6, on Thursday afternoon.

In game one, it took until the fifth inning for the Pirates to get any offense going, and by that point they already trailed 3-0. The scoring started when Kynleigh Henson led off the fifth inning with a single and then stole second and third, which allowed Madison Wammock to drive her in with a sacrifice fly. Ottawa would immediately answer with two more runs of their own to push the score to 5-1. Pirates would continue to fight though with a pair of singles in the fifth inning from Alexis Yarnell and Juliann Kindle, set up a two RBI single from Taybor Rardin to cut the Ottawa lead in half. In the seventh inning, Indy would get the tying run on base as they had runners at the corner but a flyout to right field would end the Pirates comeback bid and seal the victory for Ottawa. 

In game two, the Pirates once again found themselves playing from behind as Ottawa scored twice in the first inning and added a third run in the second inning. In the third inning, the Pirates comeback began as three walks loaded the bases and Alexis Yarnell drove in the Pirates first run with a single, followed by an RBI hit by pitch for Kylie Dennison. Ottawa would get one run back in the fourth inning to push their lead to 4-2. Indy would explode offensively in the fifth inning as the first four batters would all reach base and score highlighted by a two RBI double from Riley Hayes. Now leading 7-5, Indy would add two more insurance runs in the top of the seventh, as Hayes notched her third RBI of the game with a ground out. Ottawa would threaten with one run in the bottom half of the seventh but a strikeout looking would end the game leaving the Pirates victorious, their third win of the season. 

In game one, Juliann Kindle had a two hit day, and Taybor Rardin had a team high two RBI. In game two, Maddison Wammock reached base three times with a pair of walks and a single. Alexis Yarnell had a two hit day and scored a run, while both Kylie Dennison and Kylar Goins reached base twice and scored twice. Sarah Wrape got the win in the circle in game two.
