Pirate WBB falls to hot shooting Butler

El DORADO, Kan. - The Independence Women's basketball team couldn't slow down the hot shooting day from Butler as they fell 106-55 Saturday afternoon.

The Grizzlies hot shooting started right from the jump as they erupted for 29 first quarter points. The Pirates battled hard to hang around, but could never slow down the Grizzlies offensive attack, led by Destiny Smith, who had 10 three pointers, leading to 36 points, 32 of which came in the first half. Butler shot 60% from the field and 61% from three, compared to Independence who was 42% from the field and 33% from three. Allison Reese made the only two Pirate three pointers en route to a team high 19 points in the afternoon. She also had five rebounds, and the lone Pirate steal defensively. Three of the other four Independence starters finished in double figures, as Lauren Gentle and Asmin Tanhan each had 11 points a piece, while Mikka Chambers added 10.

The Pirates were effective from the charity stripe as they finished 11-15, led by Chambers who was a perfect 4-4 from the line.

The loss moved the Pirates to 2-23 on the year and 1-18 in KJCCC play. Independence will be on the road again, on Wednesday, as they head to take on Pratt, who they defeated 93-59 back on Jan. 27.
