Considered a pioneer in women’s basketball at Independence Community College, Marguerite Keeley was a member of the first-ever Lady Pirate basketball team and would eventually become the first All-American in the program’s history in 1975. During her freshman season, she led the Lady Pirates by averaging 20.6 points and 19 rebounds per game. One year later, she had another stellar season en route to All-America status, averaging 18 points and 15 boards an outing. She was named the Most Valuable Player as the Lady Pirates claimed the first-ever Region VI championship. The team advanced to the NJCAA Women’s National Tournament in Overland Park, where the Lady Pirates finished eighth place nationally. Keeley had a career-best 36 points and 33 rebounds in a first-round victory over Northeastern Colorado and averaged 28.3 points and 26 boards during tournament action. After graduating from ICC, she went on to play basketball at Wichita State University, where she also lettered in tennis and softball. She spent two years with the Shockers, establishing 14 school records, most of which still remained at the time of her induction into the WSU Hall of Fame in 1986. She later went on to play in the Women’s Professional Basketball League with the Milwaukee Does, Minnesota Fillies and St. Louis Streak. She was a WPBL All-Star who averaged 17.6 points per game.
