Lloyd Woods
Title: Announcer, President of ICC Booster Club

For more than two decades, Lloyd Woods served as the “Voice of the Pirates” as public announcer for Independence Community College football and women’s basketball. Yet his love and passion for ICC went well beyond that role. Woods was a longtime member of the ICC Booster Club and served as president for five years. He also had a special connection with the student-athletes, serving as an honorary parent to five football players during the 1982 season. He was involved in many aspects of the Booster Club, including the annual tradition of setting up, working and taking down the Booster Burger Stand downtown during Neewollah Festivities. Woods was born in Wichita and graduated from Wichita East High School in 1947. He served in the United States Air Force and lived in Winfield for 20 years before making Independence his home in 1971. He worked in the insurance field his entire life and was a District Manager for the Farmer’s Insurance Group and later worked as a District Representative for Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Kansas. Woods was a member of the First United Methodist Church and an active member of the Independence Museum. He was also an avid golf, recording a hole-in-one on two different occasions. Woods passed away at the age of 80 on Nov. 17, 2009. He is survived by his wife, Mary.
