Allen Wins Thriller Over Indy

The Allen Men's Basketball team won its second straight game in dramatic fashion Monday night over the Independence Pirates by the score of 83-82. Allen and Independence would go blow for flow all night, as both teams made big runs every time the other would get a lead. Allen finished the first half on a run as the Red Devils got a steal and sank a 3 on the buzzer to take a45-39 lead in the halftime break.

In the second half Independence quickly tightened up the score and the two teams continued go back and forth. Allen was 10-23 from the 3 point line, and with 6 minutes remaining the Red Devils went on a big run as Freddie Word connected on back to back 3's, and Tyren Shelley also knocked down a big 3 to extend the Allen lead to 10 points. The Pirates would not go down quietly, as they stormed back and even took a 1 point lead after a Allen technical foul late in the game.

In the final 30 seconds Allen had a two point lead, but Indy's Tim Dalger got to the rim and earned an old fashioned 3 point play to put the Pirates back ahead by 1 point with 21 seconds remaining. Allen would get the ball in Freddie Word's hands with about 10 seconds to go and after a few fakes Word drained the mid-range runner to take back the lead 83-82.

Amadou Traore would tip the inbound pass with 3.2 seconds left, and after a scramble for the loose ball the Pirates got a clean look at the buzzer, but Allen was fortunate to escape with the victory.

Freddie Word led the way in scoring for Allen with 24 points on 9 of 14 from the floor. Sophomore Shaikim Jenks finished with 18 points on 3-4 from the 3 point line. Amadou Traore ended the game with a big double-double of 14 points and 13 rebounds, and Cedric Rollerson also ended with 10 points.
