LIBERAL, Kan. - The Independence Lady Pirates traveled all the way across the state to face off with the #8 Seward County Saints. Independence got off to a slow start and was unable to get any momentum until late dropping the match in straight sets.

In the first set, the Saints scored on a hit out of bounds early, but Patricia Seller attacked with a kill tying the set at 1-1. A 2-2 even run capped by another kill from Seller tied things at 3-3 but a kill and hit out of bounds gave the Saints a 5-3 advantage.

A run of 3-1 had Seward County up by four and consecutive kills pushed the lead to 10-4 for the Saints. An error cut the lead to five, but that was only momentarily as a service error made it 11-5.

A kill by Briana Prescott made the score 11-6, but a 4-0 run pushed the Saints lead nine. A kill from Destiny Thomas cut the score to 15-7, but Seward County answered with back to back kills making it a 10-point advantage for the Saints and the Lady Pirates later dropped the set 8-25 after being outscored 8-1.

The second set began on a 7-0 run for Seward County, but Independence got on the board after a net ball cut the lead to six. A run of 2-2 made the score 9-3 after a kill by Seller and a net ball cut the Saints' lead down to five.

A kill out of bounds had the score at 9-5 and an error brought the Lady Pirates within three, but consecutive errors and an ace followed by a kill pushed the lead to seven. Another ace made the score 14-6 and a 2-0 run pushed the lead out to ten.

Independence committed several errors scoring only on two errors and a kill by Thomas and dropped the set 9-25 after being outscored 9-3.

In the third set, a block out of bounds gave the Lady Pirates an early lead, but a 2-0 run gave the Saints the advantage before Thomas spiked the ball to tie the set. The teams exchanged errors to tie the action at 4-4, but a kill had Seward County back in the lead.

An even run of 2-2 had the Lady Pirates within one and a miscommunication tied the set at 7-7 but several kills had the Saints leading by four. Miscommunications brought Independence back within one and on a hit into the antenna it was tied at 11-11.

Back to back errors tied the score at 12-12, but a 2-0 run had Seward County up 14-12 and Independence battled back but dropped the set 17-25 and the match after a run of 11-5.

The Lady Pirates (8-17, 5-9) are back on the road again Wednesday traveling to take on the Hutchinson Blue Dragons with first serve set for 6:30 pm.
