INDEPENDENCE, Kan. - All that looked to be going well for the Independence Lady Pirates last week took a turn for the worst Wednesday night against the Colby Trojans.

In the first set, the Lady Pirates jumped out to a 3-1 lead after a kill by Briana Prescott. Minutes later Colby capitalized on miscues and took a 7-3 advantage, but Independence came firing back to tie it up at 9-9.

The teams battled back and forth and a kill by Jessi Lewman gave the Lady Pirates an 11-10 lead. The Trojans went on a 5-1 run to take a 15-12 advantage and a ball into the net pushed the lead to three.

A kill by Destiny Thomas cut the lead to 15-13 and two errors tied the set at 15-15. Colby went on a 4-1 run before another Prescott kill followed by a kill from Natasha Colon and Lewman tied things at 19-19, but a 2-0 run gave Colby a 21-19 advantage. Independence fought back but dropped the set 21-25 after a 4-2 Colby run.

The second set began on a 5-2 run for the Lady Pirates after a kill by Colon, but back to back kills cut the lead to one. A 4-3 run pushed it to 8-6 and a 4-2 run capped by a Prescott kill had it 10-8 Independence before consecutive kills tied the set at 10-10.

An even run of 2-2 tied it at 12-12 but the Trojans powered up on a 7-2 run for a 19-14 lead. A Colby kill was answered on a kill by Patricia Seller, but a 5-1 run ended the set with Independence falling 16-25 and going down 0-2 in the match.

In the third set, the Lady Pirates jumped out to a 3-2 lead but a push too far and a kill put the Trojans ahead 4-3 before a Thomas kill tied it again. An even run of 4-4 had it tied at 8-8 after a kill by Lewman but three consecutive kills had Colby up 11-8.

A run of 5-3 made the lead 16-11 and Independence scored on a net ball, but a 2-0 run had Colby leading 18-12. It was a valiant effort by the Lady Pirates but after a Trojan run of 7-4 Independence dropped the set 16-25 and the set 0-3.

The Lady Pirates are now 5-13 with a conference record or 2-7 and return to action Friday on the road facing the Hesston Larks with first serve at 4 pm.
