INDEPENDENCE, Kan. - As the season continues this weekend, the Independence Pirates (1-7) are on the road Saturday as they travel to face the #19 Highland Scotties (5-3). Independence came up just short last week to Iowa Central falling by a score of 20-19, while Highland battled it out with Dodge City winning 40-33.

"It's been a long season with a lot of unfortunate circumstances," coach Jason Brown said. "This week we'll have to play aggressive and fast in order to win up there. Highland plays fast and physical in the box on defense and on offense they're going to run a lot of gap schemes to try to get some misdirection going and they'll be talented with their corners and defensive linemen."

Independence quarterback Chase Hildreth went 20-for-39 passing for 203 yards and threw three interceptions, but running back Davijuan Dean led the scoring with two touchdowns picking up 134 yards on 17 carries. The Pirates also scored after a 52-yard interception return by Juan Treadwell.

"The feel this week is the same and we've just got to show up converting on offense and getting off the field on third down on defense to put together 60 minutes of effort. We've been bitten by the injury bug a lot this year and have had to activate several redshirts, but hopefully we can get some of those players back for the game this weekend."

Highland quarterback Avery McCall went 18-for-22 passing for 112 yards and two touchdowns, while throwing one interception. The two scoring receptions were hauled in by Greg Payton who had eight receptions for 55 yards and Tra Parker who had two receptions for 16 yards. The Scotties also scored on the ground twice with Justin Ruiz who had eight carries for 158 yards, once with Kevin Brown who had 100 yards on 15 carries and an interception return of 100 yards by Reco Hannah.

Kickoff for Saturday's game is at 1 pm. Admission for Kessinger Field is $7.00 for adults and $4.00 for grades 1-12. Fans can also watch the game via livestream at http://www.949kind.com/icc-sports/
