INDEPENDENCE, Kan. - The Independence Pirates (1-6) will kick off a late-night game Saturday against the Iowa Central Tritons (4-4) after a close matchup last week saw them fall just short of a win.

"Iowa Central has a few athletes at different positions, but if we play hard and don't make mistakes and create some turnovers, we should be fine," coach Jason Brown said.

The Pirates accounted for 178 yards of total offense in a 21-16 loss to the Coffeyville Red Ravens, while the Tritons racked up 241 yards in a 28-0 win over the Ellsworth Panthers.

Independence quarterback Chase Hildreth went 10-for-32 passing for 126 yards but threw three interceptions in the contest. The Pirates scored a touchdown from running back Joshua Thomas and another touchdown who accounted for 28 rushing yards on seven carries.

The defense battled hard forcing several turnovers and scored a touchdown as a fumble was recovered in the end zone by Kailon Davis.

"It was a great game overall despite me not being out there, but I'm back and we've been working hard and expect to slow the competition up and come out with a win."

Iowa Central scored three of their four touchdowns on the ground with running back Justin Blake who accounted for 108 yards on 21 rushes and recovered a fumble and returned it for a score with linebacker Daquan Cross.

Saturday night's kickoff is at 9 pm. General admission is $8.00 for adults and $5.00 for grades K-12. Children ages 5 and under get in free along with students who present their ICC ID.  Fans can also stream the game at http://www.949kind.com/icc-sports/
