Przyszlak, Pyle prove too much for Lady Pirates

The Cowley College women's basketball team got career nights from Anna Przyszlak and Hattie Pyle in a 77-60 thumping of Independence Community College Saturday in Independence.

After a lengthy break, the victory was the second in a row for the Lady Tigers.

On Saturday, Cowley trailed 15-10 before scoring the final seven points of the opening quarter to lead 17-15. A basket by Przyszlak capped a 6-0 run to start the second quarter and increase the Lady Tigers' lead to 23-15.

Cowley would outscore Indy 19-8 in the second quarter as they took a commanding 36-23 lead into the half.

The Lady Tigers' lead would grow to 20 (57-37) after three-quarters of play, and Cowley would lead by as many as 25 points (65-40) in the 17-point road win.

"We are starting to play better together," Cowley head coach Todd Clark said.

Przyszlak finished with a career-high 30 points to go along with 11 rebounds. Przyszlak made 12-of-18 shots from the floor as Cowley shot 51.9 percent from the floor.

Freshman Hattie Pyle added a career-high 23 points on 8-of-12 shooting, and fellow freshman Jaiden Smith added 18 points and 10 rebounds as all 77 points came from the Lady Tigers' five starters.

After shooting only 36 percent through the game's first three-quarters of play, Independence scored 23 points and shot 61.5 percent in the final quarter. The Pirates turned the ball over 21 times in the defeat.

"This was probably our best defensive performance of the season," Clark said.

Jasirae Vick and Merveille Nkoyock led the Pirates with 17 points apiece as Indy fell to 8-6 overall

and 2-6 in conference play.

Cowley, 9-6 overall and 3-6 in the conference, will attempt to make it three wins in a row when

they host Pratt Community College

Wednesday at 5:30 p.m. Pratt is just 7-6 overall and 2-6 in the Jayhawk Conference.
