Grizzlies improve to 10-0 picking up big road win over Independence

The Butler women's basketball team picked up their 10th win of the season and 16th straight as they rolled to a 68-46 win on the road at Independence Saturday afternoon.

Skyla Knight led the way with 18 points and was the only Grizzly to score in double figures on the night. Paris Mullins scored six points and had eight rebounds helping the Grizzlies gain a three-game KJCCC East lead.

As the nation's leader in FG% defense, Butler once again defended the Pirates very well Saturday afternoon keeping the Pirates to 22.6% shooting while forcing 29 turnovers in the game.

"We pride ourselves on our defense and we work hard at it," said head coach Mike Helmer. "We know if we can force bad shots and contest the other teams' shots, we have a good chance of getting the rebound and converting on the other end."

Kaylee Nero, Syncere Harrod and Cymirah Williams all provided great minutes off the bench for Butler on Saturday helping hold and even increase the Grizzlies lead while in the game.

"We have great depth on this team," commented Helmer. "We have a number of girls who can score it on any given night and all of them can defend."

NEXT UP: The Grizzlies (10-0, 9-0) will host Neosho (3-6, 2-5) on Wednesday, March 3rd in the Power Plant at 5:30pm. The Grizzlies have won the last 25 matchups with the Panthers dating back to the 2001-02 season.

NOTES: The last loss the Grizzlies suffered was to Independence on February 10, 2020 in a 68-60 home loss… Third lowest shooting percentage 22.6% defense allowed this season (Dodge City 21.9% and NW Tech 20.4%)
