INDEPENDENCE, Kan. - The Trojans women's basketball team competed and fought well on the road at Independence Community College on Wednesday night but fell 58-46. For three and a half quarters, the Trojans found ways to make plays on both sides of the ball.
Early foul troubles presented a challenge, and all nine healthy players saw action in the first half, testing the depth. Once again, the offense found open shots and forced the opponent to play defense well into the shot clock. The always-present stingy defense was in full force, having to work for stops while navigating the foul issues. Ultimately, the Trojans came up short in a game closer than the final 12-point deficit.
"I am proud of our kids for competing and fighting the entire game. There's always adversity in a college basketball game and this one saw plenty. Our depth was tested early and all contributed on the court tonight. We are banged up and have kids logging major minutes, but they keep fighting and getting better. Mental fatigue hit us in the fourth quarter and some untimely live ball turnovers allowed Indy to get out in the open floor. When that happens we aren't able to get our defense set and that is when we are vulnerable. We gave up too many offensive rebounds in the fourth quarter and that took away the success we had with our defense and was costly in the end. This is a tough road trip at a place where women's basketball has been good for a long time. We will keep at it and get ready to play Pratt at home on Saturday. We hold a spot in the Region 6 tournament right now, something that hasn't been done in a while, so we want to keep fighting and get a few more wins to solidify our post-season bid. Being in the regional tournament would be a big step forward for this program, and that's been a goal of ours all season. We ask for our Colby fans to come out on Saturday and help these players continue our fighting way." Coach Spence added.
The Trojans will host Pratt Community College on Saturday, February 10th, at 2 pm CT in the Colby Event Center.
