Fighting for playoff seeding and wanting to end their injury-riddled regular season on a high note, the ICC Men's Basketball team (12-18, 9-15 in conference) faced quite the challenge last Wednesday when they faced off against Top-25 ranked Butler Grizzlies (22-8, 16-8 in conference).
Attacking with impressive precision from deep (11-21 from three), the hometown Pirates landed an upset over Butler and were able to win on sophomore night where seven rostered players were honored for their athletic and academic achievements. Using that as fuel, and wanting to give the enthusiastic crowd every chance to cheer, the Pirates attacked early and often, sealing the win late in the second half.
Led by sophomore guard Rodney Munson (21 points, 3 rebounds, 2 assists) and sophomore wing Shamann Artis (20 points, 3 rebounds, 4 assists), the Pirates shot fifty seven percent from the field, and hung tough in the paint against the much taller Butler Grizzlies. Sophomore guard Jordan Clark added twelve points, 5 rebounds, and clutch free throws down the stretch that gave the Independence community plenty to celebrate.
With the regular season wrapped up, the Pirates look to post season play. They will travel to Ark City, Kansas to take on Cowley County in the opening round of KJCCC conference tournament play. The game is this Saturday, February 26th, at 7:30pm.
