Seward County splits with Independence at home

LIBERAL, Kan. - Seward County Community College split with Independence Community College on Monday with a 10-6 game one win followed by a 2-0 game two loss. The Lady Saints are now 7-9 overall and sits in second place in the Jayhawk West with a 6-4 conference record. In the first game, Ashley Low had a two-run home run that helped the Lady Saints to the victory and in game two the Pirates were the first to score in the top of the ninth inning to take the win. 

Seward County trailed after the first inning 1-0 after Independence scored off of a base hit to left field. The Lady Saints responded in the bottom of the third inning with Melissa Crisanti able to score first off of a Pirate error. Macy Cesa-Spearman followed suit with the second run-off of an error and AJ Luna singled to left field to score Jacie Scott from third. Ashley low had her second home run of the season to bring home Luna and the Lady Saints lead 5-1.

Seward County stayed hot in the fourth inning with Crisanti starting things off with a double and later scored from a single by Scott. Spearman stole home base to score from third and Scott and Jaci Oakley both were able to score off of Pirates defensive miss ques. After the fourth inning, the Lady Saints led 9-2 and were in command. 

Independence scored three in the top of the fifth inning to cut the Lady Saints lead down to 9-6. Hannah Schulman came in to close out the game in the top of the seventh inning. After a home run by the Pirates to start off the seventh, Schulman was able to find her groove and close out the game. 

Alyssah Pontoja started off in the circle for Seward county and went six innings with ten hits, six runs, and four strikeouts. Pontoja ultimately picked up the win and has a 4-3 record on the season. 

The second game of the doubleheader was a defensive game and either team was able to score in the regular set seven innings. Ireland Caro was the starter for the Lady Saints and went the full nine innings with nine hits, two runs, and struck out 12 batters. Caro picked up the loss and now has a 3-4 record this season.

Seward County was able to get Macy Cesa-Spearman to third base in the bottom of the ninth inning but could not bring her around to score. 

With the split, Seward County is now 4-2 at home and will be on the road at Dodge City Community College on Thursday, April 1st.
