Blue Devils Close in on High Jayhawk Volleyball Finish

Kansas City Kansas Community College got a huge win in its pursuit of high Jayhawk Conference and Region VI playoff finishes with a 3-1 win at Independence Wednesday night.

With just two remaining Jayhawk matches, the Blue Devils are not only all but assured a top four finish in the region, but they're within striking distance of second place in a conference race bracing for a wild finish.

At 6-2 and in fourth place, the Blue Devils trail unbeaten and No. 2 ranked Cowley (7-0), No. 19 Neosho (7-1) and No. 7 Johnson County (6-1) but all have pivotal contests remaining.

KCKCC can throw the race into turmoil with a win at Cowley next Wednesday while Neosho and JCCC meet head on at JCCC Oct. 25. Johnson County also has contests with Labette and Highland, Cowley has Hesston and Fort Scott remaining and Neosho finishes with Labette.

KCKCC will observe Sophomore Night when it closes it schedule Oct. 25, in a match to be played in Hy-Vee Arena (formerly Kemper Arena). The move was necessitated because of repairs being made to the fieldhouse floor.

The Blue Devils (19-9) took control at Independence at the outset, winning the first two sets 25-12, 25-11. The Pirates took the third set 25-22 before KCKCC closed out the match 25-20.

Five Blue Devils had six or more kills. Jayda Watson had 10, Glodalys Colon 9, Nykeriah Allen and Taryn Dial 7 each and Mercedez Brown 6. Dial also had 37 assists; Amauri Brown 20 digs and Emma Ayers 16.
