INDEPENDENCE, Kan. - The Independence Lady Pirates hosted the Butler Grizzlies Monday night in a battle for the ages. Down to the wire until the last set, Independence would come up just short falling in the fifth set. 

In the first set, the Lady Pirates found themselves up 2-1 after a kill by Patricia seller and an error. Another error and a kill from Butler made it 3-2. 

The Grizzlies went on a 3-1 run pushing them ahead 5-4 and an error extended their lead to two before a service error had Independence back within one. The Lady Pirates answered a kill with a kill by Natasja Colon followed by a double contact to tie it at 7-7.  

A kill by Shelymar Diaz gave Independence the lead and a kill tied it up again. Kiersten Vincent delivered a kill for the lead and a Butler kill tied it at 9-9 but a 2-1 run put the Lady Pirates ahead 11-10. A 3-1 run put the Grizzlies up 13-12 before a service error tied the set and a kill by Seller put Independence ahead by a score of 14-13. 

A 3-0 run had Butler up 16-14 before a kill by Jessi Lewman cut the lead to one but a service error pushed it back to two and a kill had the Lady Pirates trailing 18-15. A service error and a kill by Diaz cut the lead to one but the service error curse again followed by a kill pushed the score to 20-17. 

A double contact pushed the lead to 21-17 for the Grizzlies but Vincent cut the lead to three with a quick kill. Back to back scores had the score 22-19 after another Vincent kill but a kill pushed the lead to four and a 2-1 run for Butler dropped the set for Independence 20-25. 

The second set began with a kill by Destiny Thomas and a ball in the net for a 2-0 lead for the Lady Pirates. Butler tied it at 2-2 but a hit out of bounds and an ace from Thomas put Independence ahead 4-2. 

Consecutive errors tied the set at 4-4 but a kill from Colon made it 5-4 before a butler block tied it again. The teams exchanged blows before the Grizzlies hit the antenna to give Independence the one-point advantage and a kill out of bounds made it 8-6 Lady Pirates. 

A 2-1 run capped on a throwdown from Seller and an ace from Hannia Rios put Independence ahead 11-7 and a run of 4-1 pushed the lead to 15-8 and a 4-3 run off another kill by Seller pushed the lead to eight before a kill out of bounds made it 20-11 Lady Pirates. 

Butler answered on a 5-1 run, but Briana Prescott delivered a kill making it t 22-16 before a 3-0 run cut their lead to four. A Grizzly kill made it 23-20 and an ace cut the score to 23-21 for Independence. 

 An error cut the lead one and another kill tied the set at 23-23, but Seller delivered a kill to give the Lady Pirates the lead. A Butler kill was answered by Thomas with one of her own but it would soon be tied again before a 2-0 run capped by a block from Lewman gave Independence the set 27-25 to tie the match at 1-1. 

In the third set, Butler jumped out 2-0, but a kill by Seller cut the lead to one. The Grizzlies answered with consecutive points but a kill by Colon and ball in the net cut the score to 4-3. Colon answered another 2-0 run cutting the score to 6-4, but three consecutive errors made it 9-4 with Butler in the lead. 

A 3-0 run brought the Lady Pirates within two, but a kill pushed the score to 10-7. Independence went on a 3-1 run cutting the Butler lead to 11-10 after a Thomas kill and exchanged blows had the score at 12-11 before a push too far and an error gave Independence the lead at 13-12. 

Seller threw down a fierce kill to push the lead to two before a kill had it 14-13. Back to back service errors had it 15-14 but Seller delivered again to push it to 16-14. Colon answered the call making the lead 17-15 but a double contact and a kill tied it at 17-17. 

A kill followed by a service error gave the Grizzlies a two-point lead before a ball in the net had Independence back within one, but an error and a kill had the Lady Pirates trailing in the set 18-21. A hit too far cut the Butler lead to two but a kill out of bounds pushed it back to three. 

Diaz delivered a kill followed by a shot from Thomas, but Butler answered on a 2-0 run and Independence dropped the set 21-25 and trailed 1-2 inn the match.  

The fourth set began with a 2-2 even run after a kill by Thomas and consecutive errors had the score even at 3-3. The back and forth battle continued before a hit to the net gave Independence a 5-4 advantage, but with another error it was tied again at 5-5. 

Butler took the lead with a kill, 6-5 and the errors continued, on serve followed by a service error to give the Lady Pirates the lead before a block tied it at 7-7. Vincent and Thomas delivered strikes and with a hit too far Independence led 10-7 before a kill cut the lead to two. 

A 2-1 run had the score at 12-9 and with a kill from Thomas and an error the Lady Pirates led 14-9 and added another point on an ace from Thomas to lead 15-9. Thomas aced again pushing the lead to seven, but a Butler kill cut the score to 16-10. 

A 2-1 run after a kill from Colon followed by an ace from the freshman made it 19-11 and another ace pushed the lead to nine. Back to back scores from both teams made it a 21-12 Independence lead before a kill made it 21-13, but a kill pout of bounds pushed the lead to nine for the Lady Pirates. 

A kill by the Grizzlies cut the lead to eight but Thomas was there pushing the lead to 23-14 with a kill. Thomas responded after an error to make it 24-15, but the Grizzlies answered twice making it a 24-17 lead for Independence. The Lady Pirates closed out the set after a hit out of bounds winning 25-17 to tie the match at 2-2. 

In the fifth set, Prescott delivered a kill and the Lady Pirates were on the board first. Diaz followed with a kill to make it a 2-0 lead, but consecutive points from Butler tied it before a block out of bounds had Independence up 3-2. 

An error tied the set at 3-3 and a block put the Grizzlies up by one before an error tied it once more. A double contact gave Butler a 5-4 lead, but it would be tied again with a kill out of bounds.  

Back and forth the teams went tying the final set at 6-6 before a kill gave the advantage to Butler. Independence scored to tie at 7-7 before a kill put Butler up by one yet again. 

Thomas struck to tie the set at 8-8 and a kill from Diaz had the Lady Pirates leading by one, but Butler killed it again to tie things at 9-9 before an error gave the Grizzlies a one-point advantage. A block pushed the score to 11-9 before a kill by Colon made it 11-10. 

Thomas delivered a strike to tie things at 11-11 and Prescott came up with a kill for the 12-11 lead. Butler answered to tie it at 12-12 and again to lead 13-12 and on a 2-0 run for Butler. Independence dropped the set 12-15 and the match in five sets. 

The Lady Pirates (6-15, 3-8) are at home again, Friday October 12 hosting the Dodge City Conquistadors with first serve set for 5:30 pm
