A longtime educator at Independence Community College, John Favero will long be remembered for not only his contributions to Pirate Athletics but to the school as a whole. During his distinguished teaching career, he taught match, starting at Weir and Erie high schools before spending 42 years in Independence. He officially retired from teaching in 2004 but not after being recognized for his many accomplishments. A member of the KNEA and NEA, Favero received eight national scholarship grants and was recognized in the Outstanding Educators of American in 1972. He was also listed in Who's Who Among College Teachers in 2000 and from 2003-05. He was later awarded Master Teacher at ICC in 2004. In addition to his teaching, Favero was known around the community and served as the treasurer of the Kiwanis Club from 1962-2004. After his retirement, he moved to Prairie Village, where he resided with his wife, Patricia, of 56 years. Favero passed away on Feb. 11, 2016, but he forever left a lasting impression on every life he touched during his time in Independence.
