The Most Valuable Player at the NJCAA Tournament for the 1977 national championship Pirate basketball team, Chester Giles still stands as one of the top players in ICC basketball history. He ranks 15th in career rebounds for the Pirates with 595 during his two-year playing career from 1975-77. During that magical 1976-77 season, he was a big part of the team’s run to the Jayhawk Conference-Eastern Division and Region VI championships. He stepped up his game even more during the NJCAA Tournament in Hutchinson as the Pirates capped things off with a 75-72 victory over San Jacinto (Texas) to claim the second of the school’s three national championships in men’s basketball. Giles was not only named to the All-Tournament Team but was also honored as MVP. He was later named All-American Second Team by the NJCAA. The Pirates had a two-year record of 62-6 during Giles’ time at ICC. He planned to transfer to Loyola University in his hometown of Chicago but instead found his way to the University of Kansas. Giles went down with a knee injury shortly after arriving on campus and had limited playing time as a junior. As a fifth-year senior in 1979-80, he played in all 28 games and started 17, averaging 4.1 points and 3.7 rebounds for the Jayhawks.
